Carnival 2011

18/02/2011 - It’s Carnival time once again in Gran Canaria, from now until the 27th of March, the island will be buzzing with fiesta fever! If your visiting Gran Canaria during carnival season it would be a tragedy not to check out the celebrations which begin in Las Palmas, the island’s cosmopolitan capital, and end in Maspalomas, the island’s largest tourist resort. Other cities around the island hold carnivals too, often with their own distinctive charm.

Carnival 2011

This year’s the capital’s carnival theme is ‘Under the Sea’, so expect to see a plethora of mermaids and mermen, alongside a myriad of other fishy delights.

At Parque Santa Catalina, in Las Palmas, a huge stage has been set up to showcase the artists who spend up to a year preparing their stunning costumes as well as their dance and musical routines.

Highlights include the Election of the Carnival Queen, on Friday February 25th. The costumes become more gravity defying and flamboyant each year, you’ll see tons of sequins, exotic make-up, amazing choreography and lots of gorgeous wannabe Queens!

The Children’s Carnival Queen Gala show is on Sunday February 27th at 19.00h, be amazed at the cutest of children parading the stage in breathtaking costumes – a fantastic night for the family.

For many, the climax of the carnival has to be the Drag Queen Gala, on Friday March 4th at 21.00h. Expect cheeky stage routines, mind-blowing costumes, extravagant make-up, vertigo inducing platform heels and enough glitz and glitter to make your eyes dazzle!

For something a bit different there’s the Canine Carnival on Sunday 6th March at 12.00h or alternatively be blown away by the celebrated Body Painting Show, held on Tuesday 8th March at 21.00h.

As well as the many staged events at Santa Catalina, the streets will be alive with street vendors, parades, music and lots of partying.

After the final parade Cabalgata in Las Palmas, the Carnival carries its merry way on down to Maspalomas in the South of the island. Where the celebrations continue, on a somewhat smaller but no less spectacular scale.
