The Carnival is in town, so its time to Party!

17/03/2011 - If you are lucky enough to be in Gran Canaria from today till Sunday 27th March, you simply must head over to Maspalomas and experience Carnival Fever!

The Carnival is in town, so its time to Party!

The main action takes place in and around the Centro Commercial Yumbo in Playa del Ingles, which can be reached easily via local bus or taxi. Its here that you’ll find the main carnival stage, where the Carnival Queens strut their stuff and the famous Chiringuitos, small portable bars that serve drinks and have makeshift BBQ’s on the side for grilling chorizo’s and fat red peppers.

The action kicks off at the Yumbo Centre with a glittering presentation of the carnival candidates, including the much-anticipated Drag Queen participants. The action continues each and every night with dance classes, musical groups and general partying.

Highlights include the crowning of the Carnival Queen, Saturday 19th at 21.00h and the children’s Carnival Queen crowning and general family fun, the following day from 17.00h.

One of the main events of the Carnival, is the Drag Queen Gala, a kitsch evening of glitter and gravity defying platform shoes! Commencing Thursday 24th at 21.00h, arrive early to bag a good spot!

Saturday night, the 26th March, sees the Gran Cabalgata or main procession wave its colourful way through the pulsating streets of Playa del Ingles. Aiming to start at 17.00h, the colourful floats and carnival goers, dressed in their wonderful costumes dance their way through the streets, culminating in the Yumbo Centre for a night of wild merriment.

The final night of celebrations is Sunday the 27th, when locals trudge through the streets following a huge elaborately decorated sardine, whilst wailing loudly in their despair at the end of the carnival. The raucous mourners don’t let an opportunity to dress up pass them by, so expect to see an extremely flamboyant take on the traditional black mourning dress!

Anyone can join in the carnival fun – why not bring your costume on holiday or rustle something up on arrival? Local shops are currently bursting with carnival paraphernalia, so if you want to unleash the pirate, devil or drag queen within, now’s your chance, in fact it would be rude not to!
