Final Leg of Teenage Sailor Laura Dekker's Record Breaking Journey
20/01/2012 - The Dutch teenager Laura Dekker, who attracted world attention by being the youngest ever sailor to circumnavigate the globe, is about to finish her remarkable solo journey on the Caribbean island of St. Maarten.
Dekker, now aged 16, began her record-breaking journey in August 2010 at the tender age of 15.
After departing from Gibraltar, Dekker sailed onto the Canary Islands, where she remained for a few weeks in order to sit out the Atlantic hurricane season.
Anfi proudly hosted Dekker when she arrived in Gran Canaria during November 2010, whilst her yacht ‘Guppy’ was moored in the Anfi Bay.
Making the most of her time on tierra firma, Laura caught up with family and friends and enjoyed some site-seeing and diving around the island.
When the worst of the hurricanes were over and after refuelling and re-stocking, Dekker headed off towards Cape Verde the following month.
Finally, after an epic voyage of over 500 days Dekker will be resting her sea legs and resuming her studies.
